SUMMARY:Babalu Celebrates 30 Years of Salsa Music in the Blue Mountains
DESCRIPTION:     Babalu Celebrates 30 Years of Salsa in the Blue Mountains\n\n \nGet ready for an unforgettable night of music\, dance\, and celebration as Babalu marks three decades of salsa in the Blue Mountains at the Mechanics Institute Lawson (The MIL) on Saturday\, 7 November\, from 8:00 PM. \n\nSince their first performance on 20 September 1996\, Babalu has built an enviable reputation as one of Australia’s most exciting live Latin bands\, captivating audiences with irresistible rhythms and energetic performances that keep dance floors packed. \nOver the years\, the seven-piece ensemble has performed at festivals\, clubs\, and cultural events across Australia\, developing a distinctive sound that bridges Australian and Afro-Caribbean musical traditions. Their music was praised by the editor of CNET’s Download.com as having: \n“Just the right amount of Cuban seasoning to ignite the spirit and soul of Latin American dance.” \nOne of the band’s proudest achievements came when the internationally renowned Feria de Cali Festival in Colombia selected Babalu’s song “Rumba” for radio promotion. Feria de Cali is one of South America’s largest and most celebrated cultural festivals\, making this recognition a significant honour for the Australian group. \nMeet the Band\nToday’s Babalu lineup features: \n\nAnne Crestani – Vocals\nDave Crestani – Bass\nLindsay Smith – Trumpet\nDarren Thurling – Trombone\nFrank Corby – Drums\nJohn Stuart – Congas\nNeil Sagewood – Keyboards\n\n\nA Multicultural Success Story\nBabalu emerged from the multicultural arts movement of the mid-1990s\, supported by NSW Government initiatives celebrating Australia’s cultural diversity. During this period\, community festivals known as Carnivale showcased music\, food\, and traditions from migrant communities throughout New South Wales. \nThe Blue Mountains Migrant Resident Association sponsored a concert in Katoomba featuring Middle Eastern group Drum Arabic alongside the newly formed Babalu. The event was a resounding success and paved the way for a series of sold-out multicultural concerts and festivals across the state. \nThese events celebrated African\, South American\, Asian\, Middle Eastern\, Central European\, and many other cultural traditions. Babalu became a regular feature\, eventually attracting performances at Sydney’s leading nightclubs and major events\, culminating in a performance at Sydney’s Bacardi Festival at Darling Harbour alongside internationally acclaimed artists. \nInspired by a Global Movement\nThe band’s rise also coincided with the worldwide success of the Buena Vista Social Club phenomenon. The award-winning album and film sparked a renewed global appreciation for Cuban music\, introducing millions of people to its rich traditions and inspiring a new generation of musicians and dancers. \nThe Beginning\nBabalu was founded in 1996 by Colombian vocalist Irma Monsalve. She was inspired by her love of Cuban music and by salsa icon Celia Cruz. For ten years\, Irma led the band with passion and energy. Later\, she returned to Colombia in 2008.\nOne More Rumba!\nThirty years on\, Babalu continues to celebrate the spirit of multiculturalism\, music\, and dance. \nThe “Multi\, Not Mono” celebration continues at The MIL. \nEvent Details\nThirty years on\, Babalu continues to celebrate music\, culture\, and community.
