They have played regularly at hotels at Katoomba\, Tuross Heads\, Windsor Tern Hill and Pendle Hill to name a few and have performed for private functions including functions at Blue Mountains Council. They’ve developed a concept that they call “Live Jukebox” where the customers choose songs for them to play from their extensive song list covering jazz\, blues\, pop and rock. For the show at the Mechanics Institute\, they will be playing the most requested songs from the Live Jukebox plus a few of their own songs. They are performing at the 2023 Melbourne and Adelaide Festivals.\n\nIn 2012 they formed a band called The Wrinklepickers which played mostly original songs\, written by Paul and Vicky\, at festivals\, pubs and events around Greater London and surrounding counties. This light-hearted pair use an electro-acoustic guitar\, drum machine and other percussion for a very live feel\, blending with close harmony vocals. Their style has a country\, hillbilly\, rockabilly\, bluegrass feel\, with the odd silly song thrown in. Although most songs are their own originals\, people think they’ve heard them before and try to join in. Warren was a past President and long-term committee member for the Friends of The  Mechanics Institute at Lawson\, and was a mainstay in the promotion of the Hall as a performance space. He was dedicated\, hands-on and instrumental in the preservation of the Hall and it’s purpose as an intimate live music performance space in the mid-Blue Mountains. He helped book quality new and established Jazz acts for the Hall and is deeply missed. The survival of the Hall as a live music venue was close to Warren’s heart and the proceeds of the night will be donated to The Friends of the Mechanics Institute Lawson Inc to assist in continuing quality live music performances at the Hall for the mutual benefit of audience and musicians. \nTo honour to the life & music of Warren Baker\, the following musicians will be performing on the night: \n  \n/ LLOYD SWANTON /\nDescribed by Billboard Magazine as “an outstanding and imaginative Australian bassist and composer”\, Lloyd Swanton is one of the biggest names in Australian Jazz and three-time winner of Best Bassist in the Australian Jazz and Blues Awards. \nLloyd co-founded internationally renowned improv powerhouse The Necks alongside Chris Abrahams and Tony Buck in 1986\, and has since toured the globe\, won 4 ARIA awards and was recently recognised as one of the top 50 ‘Greatest Australian Artists of All Time’ by Rolling Stone Magazine. \nLloyd’s long-running group\, The Catholics\, has also released seven albums\, all produced and predominantly composed by him\, with three receiving ARIA Award nominations. Another side to Gary is his appearances weekdays on the ABC TV children’s channel in the pre-school show Lah Lah’s Adventures. \nIn home town Springwood\, just west of Sydney\, he is the artistic director of the music concert series Live at the Village which has presented leading musicians in a variety of improvised music since late 2009. \nSanctuary is the recording of the latest album which was supported by the Australia Council. Psalm from ‘In the Palm of Your Hand’ is a five part gospel-jazz work was commissioned by the St Paul’s Grammar School\, Cranebrook in 2004. He has a resume of stage\, recording and screen credits to match any professional musician working in Australia today.  Nic’s work in pop and rock includes playing with headlining artists such as Wendy Mathews\, The Whitlams\, Jenny Morris\, Boy George/Culture Club\, Glenn Shorrock\, Grace Knight\, Rhonda Burchmore and Christine Anu. He has also worked with jazz vocalists (Tina Harrod\, Lily Dior\, Trish Delaney Brown\, and more) as well as jazz bands including the Catholics\, Mike Nock\, Greg Coffin Trio\, Darren Heinrich Trio\, Jeremy Sawkins\, Adam Miller\, and many others. \nNic has performed on a number of movie and TV soundtracks including David Wenham’s Ellipsis (music by Megan Washington)\, Chocolate Oyster and The Great Mint Swindle (score by Jim Mogine of Midnight Oil). \n  \n/ TIM BRUER / \nTim Bruer is a Sydney based pianist and composer. He performs regularly around the Sydney area and also teaches piano and a number of other subjects at The Australian Institute of Music. Over a career spanning more than 40 years\, Tim has performed with many of Australia’s finest musicians including James Morrison\, Bernie McGann\, Jonathan Zwartz\, Dale Barlow\, Jackie Orzarsky\, Steve Hunter and Elana Stone. He holds both a Bachelor of Music and a Master of Music degree in jazz performance and has studied extensively with Mike Nock. In 2007 he released his first and well-received CD\, “The Tim Bruer Quartet” and he is currently completing a solo piano album. He has also been featured on recordings by bands such as The Acca Daiquiris and Hammerhead as well as artists such as Guy LeClaire and Max Sharam. \n  \n/ JAMES GREENING / \nSearch JAMES GREENING – TROMBONE and a plethora of projects past and present will hit the screen. James Greening has been a leading voice in the music scene in Sydney and Australia for more than thirty years. Trombones\, pocket trumpet\, slide trumpet\, tuba\, sousaphone and diddly bow bass add to James’ diversity as a performer. His roots are in any music that grooves\, expressed more often in jazz as a founding member of seminal Australian jazz bands such as Ten Part Invention\, Wanderlust\, The Catholics\, The Umbrellas and The Australian Art Orchestra. \nThe World According to James\, formed in 1992\, saw James step forward as a bandleader and composer\, presenting music with all the qualities of wit\, creativity and exuberance that have long been associated with his work as a soloist. Three critically acclaimed CDs of original compositions include No Job Too Small\, Wayback (ARIA nominated) and their third CD\, Lingua Franca\, winning the AIR (Australian Independent Records Labels) award for Jazz album of the year for 2010. In 2012\, James Greening launched a new 7-piece project\, Greening from Ear to Ear and composed a new suite of original music\, Tam O’Shanter Tales. Neil released his album\, Octagon in 2017 and supported Elena Kats-Chernin (composer/pianist) & Tamara-Anna Cislowska at the Mechanics Institute in 2020. For this performance\, Neil will showcase some original compositions as well as perform duets of Irish songs with the fabulous Rob Thompson on harmonica. \n  \n/ DAVID ANDERSON /\nDave Anderson of Woodford has played rock and jazz for his 60-year musical career. He is a renowned and respected singer in both genres and played in many combos with Warren Baker. \n  \n/ ANNE CRESTANI / \nAnne Crestani is a well-known local jazz\, latin\, funk and soul singer and has performed in venues across the Blue Mountains and beyond for over 20 years. Both serious and humorous\, the challenge for Ann is to transpose music and stories for the music to make the stories come to life utilising a vast background of musical influences. She has played as many of the instruments as possible herself on the recording being a multi-instrumentalist – double bass/guitar/mandolin among others – and vocalist. However\, she has been helped in this process by three fine musicians\, two of whom make up the other two-thirds of Tres Amigas – Jane Andino piano and Inge Courtenay- Haentjes violin – with Ann. They have been gently travelling under this nom de plume for the last few years showcasing Latin/jazz and original compositions while also pursuing their own directions. Paul Laszlo’s double bass/banjo adds another dimension to the ensemble on occasion.\n\nWhen Ann mentioned she was doing her own project\, Jane\, Inge and Paul were all very keen to support her both in the studio and in the live realisation of the material. They have played together under many guises – tango\, jazz\, French Cabaret\, classical\, folk and anything else which arises and this concert performance is a really exciting culmination of superb musicianship and long-term friendship. \n\n\n/ KING CURLY / \n \nHailing from the Blue Mountains NSW\, King Curly is the invention of local singer/songwriter Steve Appel – a long time enigma of original Australian music. Over 20 years this chiefly acoustic ensemble has been capturing the hearts of music lovers and some of the biggest names in the business while remaining virtually unknown to commercial airwaves. King Curly has toured by invitation with acts as diverse as k.d Lang\, Paul Kelly and The Cat Empire throughout Australia\, Europe and the US. \nAfter a long absence from the stage\, building alternative-design mud houses\, Steve Appel has re-emerged to showcase this new material. A group of songs aptly named ‘Songs’\, many written with his long-time friend and lyricist Daniel Creighton and recorded alongside musicians Steve Grieve (guitar) and Johnny Graffham (pedal steel). \nGrieve first earned his reputation as a first-rate axeman playing the biker bars of Canberra in the 80s as ‘Steve Grieve and The Mourners’ and since then has toured with the likes of Christine Anu and Margaret Urlich. Johnny is a fine craftsman with his own line of guitars and along with fixing cars\, and pretty much anything else\, he is a respected pedal steel player working with luminaries such as Rob Hirst. \nAppel is a true creative. Folk and Bluesman Jarvis has been performing since the seventies around Sydney and at many venues in the Blue Mountains since the nineties. He is highly respected among many musicians and after early accolades as a solo performer has been a member of several well-known bands- Last Bus\, Rent Party\, the Hokum Onsomble\, Duck Soup\, three left feet with the late Greg Derrig and more recently as a duo with Al Meadows. \nBONNIEDOON\nBonniedoon are an Australian indie rock band with a heavy blues influence. The band formed in Sydney’s Blue Mountains in 2011. Bonniedoon satisfy their audience with the powerhouse vocals of Bonnie Coady\, the soulfully solid rhythms of guitarist Sheridan Hurst\, the electrifying lead guitar lines of Hamish Rynehart\, the boot thumping bass notes of Michael George and the tastefully delivered rocking drum beats of Colin “Metronome Man” McIntosh.\nThe band has released two studio EPs and is currently working on their first studio album. You won’t be alone if you don a dress to raise awareness of the plight of the 60 million girls around the world that don’t get the chance to wear school uniforms\, something that we all take for granted. \n  \nTHE CHARITY \nThe event will raise money for the ONE GIRL CHARITY which helps in educating girls in Sierra Leone and Uganda. In line with the original principles of the Mechanics Institutes in promoting education of the disadvantaged to improve lives the One Girl Charity seeks to harness the power of education to advance change in the lives of girls in their communities. The charity has raised $2.5 million since it was established in 2009 and has helped over 12\,000 girls achieve a high school education. His extensive background in a variety of genres with many of the world’s top musicians give his live performances a rarely heard breadth and depth a scant few can equal. Based in Sydney since 1986\, he previously spent 25 years in the USA\, working with many of the world’s top jazz artists. His compositions include orchestral music\, woodwind/percussion ensembles\, electronic/choral works etc.\, and have been recorded and performed by a range of jazz & non-jazz performers. Attracting many awards and honours over his lengthy career in 2014 he was awarded the Don Banks Music Award\, the most valuable individual music award in Australia. In 2009 he was inducted into the Bell Awards\, Australian Jazz Hall of Fame and in 2003 presented with the New Zealand Order of Merit (ONZM). In 2010 a biography of Mike’s life and career was published: Serious Fun: The Life and Music of Mike Nock \n“As music director of Naxos Jazz from 1996 to 2002 he oversaw the production of more than 60 internationally released CDs.” \n\nNorman Meehan\, Victoria University Press\n\n“Nock’s ringing iconoclasm pervades all his music\, taps a deep well of melody that transcends jazz and informs and ignites his every encounter.” \n\nFred Bouchard\, Downbeat (USA)\n\nJonathan Zwartz: \nApart from being known as one of the major players on the Australian jazz landscape\, having played and toured nationally with Pharoah Sanders\, Branford Marsalis\, Lionel Loueke\, Kurt Elling\, Mark Murphy\, Larry Goldings\, Johnny Griffin\, Terri-Lynn Carrington\, Mike Nock\, Renee Geyer\, Tim Rogers and Katie Noonan\, double bassist Jonathan Zwartz is also a composer\, arranger and songwriter. He has toured internationally with James Morrison and Don Burrows\, Bernie McGann\, Mike Nock\, Amelia Zirin Brown and Emma Pask\, and is undertaking a tour of Spain with Jade MacRae in August 2019. His debut Album of original compositions ‘The Sea’ was released in 2009 and won two Bell awards. His follow up CD entitled ‘The Remembering and Forgetting of the Air’\, won best jazz album in the Australian Recording Industry (AIR) awards. His third Album ‘Animarum’ was released to critical acclaim in Feb 2018 and won the ARIA award that year for best jazz album. It has also been nominated for an AIR Award in 2019. Jonathan has a Masters Degree in Music from the Australian National University\, an Associate Diploma in Jazz Studies from the NSW Conservatorium and also completed a diploma in screen composition at the Australian Film Television and Radio School in 2012. He undertook an Australia Council research Grant in 2014 to study composition and orchestration with Nigel Westlake and Christopher Gordon. He co-produced a ten part series on Australian jazz for ABC TV entitled ‘The Pulse’\, which has been rescreened many times since the series’ release in 2002. Jonathan has composed Music for the documentary ‘To Spring From The Hand’ (2014) ‘Ka-Ching\, a Pokies Nation’ (ABC\, 2016)\, Madhattan\, (2016)\, The Scribe (2017) Backtrack Boys (2018) and a number of short films as well as promotional ads including ‘Man Up’ (ABC TV) that went viral worldwide with 70 million hits. He is currently working on a production and orchestration project for Martha Marlow\, due for release later in 2019. Jonathan has been an APRA ambassador since 2010. \nTim Firth: \nTim Firth is one of Australia’s most in-demand drummers. He has performed with some of Australia’s finest jazz musicians and has toured extensively throughout Australia\, Europe and Asia. Tim completed two Bachelor of Music degrees at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music and The University of New South Wales. He was the winner of the 2011 National Jazz Awards at the Wangaratta Jazz Festival and has recorded on more than 50 Albums. He frequently performs at Australia’s leading jazz festivals as well as International Festivals throughout Europe and South East Asia. Edwin is a founding member of the baroque ensemble ACRONYM which has released six full-length albums of previously unknown and unrecorded baroque music. Edwin also performs all over the world with Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra. \nGuitarist William Coulter has been performing and recording traditional guitar music for over twenty years. His most recent solo recording\, The Road Home (Gourd Music) was met with critical acclaim\, and in 2005\, he received a Grammy Award for his contribution to The Pink Guitar\, a collection of solo guitar arrangements of Henry Mancini’s music. William maintains a classical guitar studio at the University of California at Santa Cruz and teaches at many summer music camps. This fact is an interesting connection to Lawson as the original subdivisions in Lawson were named Santa Cruz and San Jose.

The ensemble of mandolinists and guitarists will be performing classics including the Vivaldi Mandolin Concert and tango music by Piazolla\, as well as World Music with an Eastern European flavour and some surprises to delight the audience. \n \nRadio listeners may have already heard Plektra’s CD on ABC Classic FM. This CD is enjoying critical acclaim internationally.\n“Many mandolinists talk a world music game\, but Lalor (and Plektra) walk the walk and play for keeps”…. Prof. Robert Margo\, Classical Mandolin Society of America. \nThe group is led by Kiev-trained\, internationally renowned mandolin soloist Dr. Stephen Lalor who performs and tours with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra\, Australian Chamber Orchestra\, Australia Opera and Ballet Orchestra as well a number of overseas orchestras. Lalor also arranges or writes much of Plektra’s music. \nPlektra has toured Germany in 2010 and 2014 where they were invited to perform at Europe’s leading festival for mandolin and guitar music\, BDZ. Similarly\, they toured the USA in 2012 to perform at the Classical Mandolin Society of America’s festival in Minneapolis. \nPlektra includes musicians from Sydney\, the Blue Mountains and Putty. His guitar playing is a simple\, primitive and hypnotic boogie – one that sounds as though humans have been playing it since the dawn of time. \nThe subtle sense of charisma and confidence The New Savages emanate to their audiences comes from having their ears are tuned to sounds from another world. Milan seems to find himself a kindred spirit to the original Delta Bluesmen\, who lived and recorded before the Great Depression. This led to a pilgrimage to the depth of the Mississippi Hill Country to understand his craft. \nSeventh Son is the culmination of being on the road relentlessly across Australia for 4 years\, playing over 350 shows across the Continent.
