SUMMARY:ROGER FRAMPTON COMES ALIVE! Film + Live music by Gary Daley Quintet
DESCRIPTION:Celebrating Roger Frampton: A Tribute to a Jazz Visionary\n\nHonouring a Jazz Legend\nRoger Frampton\nJoin us as we celebrate the memory of Roger Frampton\, one of Australia’s most influential jazz musicians.\nThis special event honours a legacy that continues to inspire artists and audiences across generations. \nAt the heart of the evening is the documentary Roger Frampton Comes Alive! by Dr Emily Rytmeister.\nThe film offers a vivid portrait of the late musician (1948–2000). Moreover\, it highlights how his creativity and innovation shaped the future of Australian jazz and improvised music. \n\nEvent Highlights\nThe program begins with an introduction by Bruce Johnson\, an esteemed Australian jazz historian. His insights will help set the stage for this inspiring celebration. \nAfter the screening\, audiences will experience a live performance by the Gary Daley Quintet\, featuring:\n Gary Daley – Piano & Accordion\n Steve Elphick – Double Bass\n Gordon Rytmeister – Drums\n Paul Cutlan – Reeds\n Daryl Pratt – Vibraphone \nA number of musicians have worked\, toured\, or recorded with Frampton. Furthermore\, every member has made a unique contribution to Australia’s artistic landscape. \nTogether\, they will bring Frampton’s powerful compositions back to life. \nTherefore\, this event promises to be a heartfelt and memorable celebration—one that both honours his enduring legacy and showcases the brilliance of Australian jazz. \n \n\n\n\nFilm Trailer\n \n\nAbout Roger Frampton\nEarly Life and Musical Journey\nRoger Frampton was born in Portsmouth\, England\, in 1948.\nBy the age of 15\, he had already formed his own modern jazz band. Shortly after\, at 19\, he migrated to Australia with his family.\nFrom that point onward\, he became a central figure in the Australian music scene. In addition\, he explored new forms of contemporary and improvised music with fearless creativity. \n\nA Visionary in Sound\nAccording to Bruce Johnson in the Oxford Companion to Australian Jazz: \n“A musician of often intimidating energy and unpredictability.” \nIndeed\, Frampton’s energy and originality were unmatched. The word genius is often overused; however\, in his case\, it truly fits.\nHe was gifted\, daring\, and endlessly inventive. Consequently\, he pushed the limits of jazz in Australia and influenced countless musicians along the way. \nJim McLeod (ABC Jazz Presenter) makes the following observations on the cover  of the album Ten Part Invention – Live at Wangaratta\, recorded on 31 October 1999. \nFor Frampton\, jazz was not merely entertainment—it was art. \nIt had the power to move people\, change moods\, and speak directly to the heart. \nMoreover\, through improvisation and collaboration\, his music continues to evolve and inspire. \nHis commentary offers valuable insight into Frampton’s remarkable final years. \n\nA Final Bow\nIn 1999\, Frampton performed with Ten Part Invention knowing he was battling a brain tumor. Although he faced great challenges\, his artistry never wavered.\nTragically\, he passed away only three months later. Nevertheless\, his legacy lives on—through his recordings\, compositions\, and the musicians he mentored. \n\nA Celebration of Legacy\nThis tribute at The Mil brings together film\, music\, and shared memory. \nIt unites musicians\, friends\, and fans in honour of a life devoted to sound\, innovation\, and creativity. \nThe performance by Gary Daley Quintet will stand as both a remembrance and a revival of Frampton’s extraordinary spirit. \nUltimately\, Roger Frampton’s spirit endures—alive in every note\, every improvisation\, and every heart it touches. \nHOMAGE TO ROGER FRAMPTON w/ The Gary Daley Quintet: LIVE @ THE LAWSON MECHANIC’S INSTITUTE[the mil]  // Sunday\, 26 October 2025 // Doors 11:15 am; Film 11.30 pm -Live Music  2.00pm – 3.45pm with interval // Location: The Mechanics Institute Lawson. 284 Great Western Highway\, Lawson. // Tickets: From $56 [ student] – \nBOOK HERE NOW

SUMMARY:THE AFFINITY QUARTET 'Death and the Maiden' tour // Live @ The Mechanic's Institute\, Lawson.
DESCRIPTION:After their acclaimed European tour\, the Affinity Quartet return to the Mechanics Institute Lawson [The MIL] on Friday 25 October 2024 commencing at 8.00 pm. (The Age) Affinity Quartet pairs Schubert’s poetic and monumental ‘Death and the Maiden’ with Beethoven’s Second String Quartet in G Major. It was Beethoven’s idiosyncratic musical development and emotional depth and range in the form that would inspire Schubert to compose his own string quartets. Alongside these pivotal works\, Affinity Quartet premières Australian composer\, Alice Chance’s new work for Affinity Quartet\, commissioned by Musica Viva Australia to be performed at their Sydney Morning Masters Series and the Melbourne Recital Centre. Reflecting on Schubert’s rich fantasy and metaphors of love and destruction in Death and the Maiden\, Chance draws on Marie-Catherine d’Aulnoy’s 17th century fairy tale l’Oiseau bleu with and Rossini’s The Thieving Magpie to explore how objects gifted to loved ones can communicate significance across time and realms. \nWebsite http://alicechance.com \nPersonnel \nShane Chen\, violin\nNicholas Waters\, violin\nIsabella Bignasca\, viola\nMee Na Lojewski\, cello

SUMMARY:WILDE ABOUT OSCAR\, 'DREAMS OF FALLING' TRIO // Live @ The Mechanic's Institute\, Lawson.
DESCRIPTION:WILDE ABOUT OSCAR; ‘DREAMS OF FALLING’ TRIO: LIVE @ THE MECHANIC’S INSTITUTE // Sunday\, 25 August 2024 // Doors Open 3:30 pm\, Show Starts 4:00 pm// Venue: The Mechanic’s Institute\, Lawson \n‘Dreams of Falling’ is a trio comprising JOHN SHAND (spoken word\, percussion)\, REBECCA DANIEL (1741 violin\, vocals) and LEIGH BIRKETT (guitar\, vocals). They celebrate the man\, the myth and his work in Wilde About Oscar\, drawing on quotes and excerpts to build a picture of the full flowering of Wilde’s brilliance\, with musical accompaniment and interludes (from tango to Middle Eastern). The first half of the show shines a light on the work of others\, including Dylan Thomas’s hilarious Under Milk Wood and Walkley Award-winning John Shand’s writing\, from poetry to plays to his portraits of jazz legends Billie Holiday and Django Reinhardt. \n“I have put my genius into my life and only my talent into my works\,” Oscar Wilde fibbed\, having liberally sprinkled that genius over Salome\, The Happy Prince and The Importance of Being Earnest. Poet W.B. Yeats called him “the greatest talker of all time”\, and between his works\, his letters and his conversation\, arguably the wittiest man in history took shape. \nWilde was a clever wit and renowned for many enduring observations\, such as’ NOWADAYS PEOPLE KNOW THE PRICE OF EVERYTHING AND THE VALUE OF NOTHING‘ and ‘I MAY AS WELL BE MYSELF AS EVERYONE ELSE IS TAKEN’.

One third of the legendary improvised minimalism trio\, The Necks\, Chris Abrahams is a great match for the band\, bringing an expansive and scintillating approach to their music. \n“In a head-bopping nod to the obvious\, The Vampires play vamps. Yet\, these are no ordinary vamps. Written and improvised melodies are beautiful and flawless\, and the harmonies between the three voices (woodwinds\, brass\, bass) ring with pitch-perfect sonority. There is a sublime pacing to each of the tunes here\, with strategic shifts in texture\, tonality\, tonality\, rhythm or intensity twisting the narrative of each hypnotic groove into an ever-unfolding and irresistible arc.”\n– Gary Fukushima\, Downbeat. \n“Original\, melodically minimal compositions with hidden details scattered in every corner you look—covering nearly every topographic musical element and framed in a cohesive whole.”\n– Friedrich Kunzman\, All About Jazz \n\n/ MEALS & BAR /\nThe Friends of the Mechanic’s Institute will offer a bar by donation on the night\, and Red Pepper Catering will be on-site offering meals. The kitchen will open from 6:30 pm. \n\n/ THE SCHEDULE /\nDate: Saturday\, 25 November 2023.\nVenue: The Mechanic’s Institute\, Lawson. 284 Great Western Highway\, Lawson. \nDoors & Kitchen Open: 6:15 pm\nFirst Set: 7:30-8:15 pm\nSecond Set: 8:45-9:30 pm \nTickets: $40/35 – BOOK NOW \n\nMusic in the Mountains and The Friends of the Mechanic’s Institute acknowledge the Dharug and Gundungurra people as the Traditional Owners of the land where our experiences are being shared.

They have played regularly at hotels at Katoomba\, Tuross Heads\, Windsor Tern Hill and Pendle Hill to name a few and have performed for private functions including functions at Blue Mountains Council. The past few years has seen the band busy touring Australia\, Japan\, USA\, UK and Spain whilst finding themselves quite at home featuring at “Steam Punk” festivals\, Halloween celebrations\, as much as the usual fare of clubs and pubs.\nSee YOUTUBE clip – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lG6c-TX60_A\n\n\n/ THE SCHEDULE /\nDoors Open: 2:30pm\nArgentis Duo: 3:00-3:45pm\nWrinklepickers Duo: 4:00-4:45pm\nMike Childs: 5:00-5:45pm\nSideshow Annie: 6:00-6:45pm\n\n\n/ TICKETS /\nAdmission: $32-12 + booking fee\n\n\n/ CATERING & BAR /\nThe Mechanics Institute’s newly refurbished back room opens at 5.30 pm for food & refreshments courtesy of ‘Red Pepper Catering’. Amongst the musicians\, there is a depth of talent and passion and a rich source of song. The Spanish word “Duende” means “the dark energy which pervades all the best art and music”. Like the intangible term itself\, the Australian band El Duende is difficult to label\, but with their mix of classical\, jazz and rock instruments and playing styles\, evocative songs and intense expression\, they have a unique style that draws audiences in. With influences as diverse as Something for Kate\, Echo and the Bunnymen\, REM\, The National\, The Saints\, Go-betweens\, Hunters and Collectors\, flamenco and Roy Orbison\, the band formed in late 2002\, slowly evolving through regular live performances and recordings of their original material. For this performance\, the band will feature Daniel Morphett (vocals & guitar)\, Michael Linney (sax)\, Peter Card (bass)\, Igor Fitzgerald (drums)\, Virgil Reality (trumpet) and Peter Kelly (trumpet). \n“…these guys are classicists…” \nNick Heath Drum Media Magazine. \n“…Daniel Morphett is the best undiscovered songwriter in Australia…” \nJames Cruickshank (Cruel Sea). \n  \n/ KAZIAH BAND – 9:50 pm / \n \nKaziah Band is a surf/dream pop/indie rock band based in the Blue Mountains consisting of Matt (Lead guitar/vocalist) and Sam (keyboard\, bass guitar) Macken\, Callum Wulff (drums\, bass guitar) and Ben Nixon (drums\, bass guitar\, guitar). The band formed from a music class at St Columba’s in Springwood\, utilizing inherently simple sounds\, covering Tame Impala’s “solitude is bliss” and a few other throwaway originals. Additionally\, the band explored new and eccentric genres and composed a variety of songs over the course of 2017 to early 2018 resulting in the release of their debut EP\, “EP” in which each song obtained a different and unique inspiration. The unusual mix of psychedelic pop-rock\, funk and surf rock in the EP founded a loyal fan base of youth in the Blue Mountains and Sydney. The band has played to enthusiastic audiences at Katoomba’s Junction 142\, The Lawson Pub\, the Baroque Room\, the Mechanics Institute Lawson\, The Annandale Hotel\, and kick-ass house parties just to name a few. SUMMARY:Double Bill - ANN PALUMBO AND FRIENDS & KING CURLY // Live @ The Mechanic's Institute\, Lawson.
DESCRIPTION:In partnership with Great Southern Nights\, The Friends of The Mechanic’s Institute proudly presents a double bill\, featuring two incredible Blue Mountains acts\, ANN PALUMBO & FRIENDS and KING CURLY. Whilst these two acts come from different musical backgrounds\, this double-bill showcases spellbinding music and exquisite storytelling live on stage with two acts eager to tell their stories. \n\nANN PALUMBO AND FRIENDS & KING CURLY: LIVE @ THE MECHANIC’S INSTITUTE // Saturday\, 2 April 2022 // Doors 6:30 pm // Tickets: $38 + bf \n\n\nLocation: The Mechanic’s Institute\, Lawson. 284 Great Western Highway\, Lawson.\n \n\n\n\n\n/ ANN PALUMBO & FRIENDS (feat TRES AMIGAS and PAUL LASZLO) / \n\n \nWith a backdrop of the COVID-19 pandemic and lockdowns\, Ann Palumbo has been in the process of recording her own original ideas and music based on observations of the human condition. Both serious and humorous\, the challenge for Ann is to transpose music and stories for the music to make the stories come to life utilising a vast background of musical influences. She has played as many of the instruments as possible herself on the recording being a multi-instrumentalist – double bass/guitar/mandolin among others – and vocalist. However\, she has been helped in this process by three fine musicians\, two of whom make up the other two-thirds of Tres Amigas – Jane Andino piano and Inge Courtenay- Haentjes violin – with Ann. They have been gently travelling under this nom de plume for the last few years showcasing Latin/jazz and original compositions while also pursuing their own directions. Paul Laszlo’s double bass/banjo adds another dimension to the ensemble on occasion.\n\nWhen Ann mentioned she was doing her own project\, Jane\, Inge and Paul were all very keen to support her both in the studio and in the live realisation of the material. They have played together under many guises – tango\, jazz\, French Cabaret\, classical\, folk and anything else which arises and this concert performance is a really exciting culmination of superb musicianship and long-term friendship. \n\n\n/ KING CURLY / \n \nHailing from the Blue Mountains NSW\, King Curly is the invention of local singer/songwriter Steve Appel – a long time enigma of original Australian music. Over 20 years this chiefly acoustic ensemble has been capturing the hearts of music lovers and some of the biggest names in the business while remaining virtually unknown to commercial airwaves. King Curly has toured by invitation with acts as diverse as k.d Lang\, Paul Kelly and The Cat Empire throughout Australia\, Europe and the US. \nAfter a long absence from the stage\, building alternative-design mud houses\, Steve Appel has re-emerged to showcase this new material. A group of songs aptly named ‘Songs’\, many written with his long-time friend and lyricist Daniel Creighton and recorded alongside musicians Steve Grieve (guitar) and Johnny Graffham (pedal steel). \nGrieve first earned his reputation as a first-rate axeman playing the biker bars of Canberra in the 80s as ‘Steve Grieve and The Mourners’ and since then has toured with the likes of Christine Anu and Margaret Urlich. Johnny is a fine craftsman with his own line of guitars and along with fixing cars\, and pretty much anything else\, he is a respected pedal steel player working with luminaries such as Rob Hirst. \nAppel is a true creative. His songs and his buildings are beautiful and relevant to the times. \n“Tiny Tim meets the gritty storytelling of Lou Reed in songs that bring to life avenging zombies\, ukulele bumblebees\, possessed pianos and a certain air of quiet\, smalltown romance\, against an impossibly beautiful backdrop of chook-shed instrumentation”. \n“…music is born of the desire to right wrongs and to punish evil. In that respect\, his spiritual forefathers are Robin Hood\, Batman\, Moses etc. Medicine for all of us in a time when Evil is enjoying a stronger-than-usual stranglehold on the world.” \n\n\n/ MEALS & BAR / \nThe Friends of the Mechanic’s Institute will offer a bar by donation on the night\, and Red Pepper Catering will be on-site offering meals. The kitchen will open from 6:30 pm. \n\n\n\n\n/ THE SCHEDULE /\nDate: Saturday\, 2 April 2022.\nVenue: The Mechanic’s Institute\, Lawson. 284 Great Western Highway\, Lawson.\n\nDoors & Kitchen Open: 6:30 pm\nAnn Palumbo & Friends: 8:00-9:15 pm\nKing Curly: 9:40-11:00 pm\n\nTickets: $38 (+ bf) ea\n\n// Promotional support by Music in the Mountains //

SUMMARY:Three Hand Beat Bandits and Soular Spill
DESCRIPTION:THREE HANDED BEAT BANDTS & SOULAR SPILL // Saturday November 14\, 2020 // Doors open 6:40pm // The Mechanic’s Institute\, Lawson \nSOULAR SPILL\nStarting out as a jazz duo 5 years ago with just stripped back double bass and strong vocal harmonies at its core\, Soular Spill\, an evolving musical collective\, has grown into a band comprising of all Blue Mountains based musicians. Each member contributes their own unique flavour\, drawing on a rich tapestry of musical experience\, and blends this into a warm folky sound that resounds with soul. With Lawson local Sarah Jane Spillane up front on lead vocals and rhythm guitar\, Skye Evans on the double bass and vocal harmonies\, Colin Day on lead guitar with an array of effects\, with either Frank Corby or Matt Skeleton laying down the beats on drums\, Soular Spill creates a vibe that you can lean into. This music is soothing to listen to. \nTHREE HANDED BEAT BANDITS\n…undoubtedly the best three-handed big band in the world today. Made up of the two-handed\, John Stuart\, and the single-handed\, Neill Duncan – between them they play guitar\, bass\, congas\, drums and saxophone\, all at the same time. Megaphone vocals included\, this beat combo swing their listeners through a kaleidoscope of musical styles\, including reggae\, ska\, calypso\, funk\, swing\, and a little klezmer thrown in for good measure. Beautiful to the ear. Great for the feet. \nNeill Duncan is one of New Zealand’s most exciting and eccentric musical exports. His natural talent was almost cut short in 2016 when he lost his left arm to cancer. Proving you can’t keep a great musician quiet\, Neill now plays a bespoke\, one-handed tenor saxophone\, designed and built in Amsterdam. As if that weren’t impressive enough\, he also plays an adapted drum kit\, a megaphone\, and a few additional weird and wonderful instruments that thrill crowds Australia-wide. \nJohn Stuart is a master of the seven-string guitar. That one extra string lets John cover the bass lines as well as the chords that accompany the Bandit’s wide repertoire. At any given time\, you can see John switching between driving bass lines and sparkling melodies. Not to be outdone by his single-handed collaborator\, John also adds dynamic South American rhythms to the mix with mighty conga playing that get every crowd up and jumping. \nTHE SCHEDULE\nDoors Open: 6:40 pm\nSoular Spill: 7:00-8:00 pm\nThree Handed Beat Bandits: 8:15-9:00 pm\nThree Handed Beat Bandites + Guests: 9:15-10 pm \nTICKETS\nAdmission: Show Only $30 + booking fee\nBook Now – https://www.trybooking.com/BMETK \nCATERING & BAR\nThe Mechanics Institute’s newly refurbished back room opens at 5.30 pm for food & refreshments courtesy of ‘Redpepper Catering’ (not included in the ticket price).
